Electric vehicle registrations in New Zealand 2013-2019
Growth in new electric vehicle registrations in New Zealand has been significant. In 2013, 39 electric vehicles were registered in the country; this grew to a little over seven thousand new registrations in 2019. This can be attributed in part to growing consumer awareness of environmental issues; buyers are increasingly making more eco-friendly purchases. It can also be attributed to the increased production and affordability of electric vehicles, compared to several years ago; both of these factors make environmentally friendly transport a more accessible option to a wider range of consumers.

The number of electric vehicles being sold in New Zealand certainly reflects this increased purchase accessibility (as well as a shift in the consumer mindset). In December 2019, 18.7 thousand electric cars were sold in New Zealand in total. Growth in sales can be seen monthly throughout 2019; 12.21 thousand electric vehicles were sold in January, and 14.88 thousand were sold in June.

In 2019, a total of 104.49 thousand cars were sold in New Zealand, a slight decrease from 2018. However, the industry has enjoyed growth over the course of the last ten years, following a drop in 2009 (that can be attributed to the global financial crisis that occurred at that time). Sales figures now seem to have stabilized at around 100 thousand units yearly. Vehicles in New Zealand are predominantly cars; as of April 2020 there were 2.17 million cars registered nationally.
